It is an episode of “Chopped Sweets”. Round 2 has three participants showcasing the spicy elements of chocolate.
I am intrigued! Not just by the delicious looking chocolate desserts, but by the fact that not one of the three contestants started their careers as chefs.
One was an engineer, one was in corporate sales and the third studied environmental waste management. It is the 2nd round of chocolate and the 2nd careers for the Chefs. These individuals may have started in other fields but they felt a culinary calling, took the risk and here they were on TV competing for $10,000 as pastry chefs.
It is like my sister, who is a highly qualified educator but after more than 10 years in the classroom, she became disillusioned by the system. One day she announced to us she was quitting her job to start a marshmallow company. It was a shock that she took the risk but not surprising what she chose. The kitchen has always been her happy place.
Now 4 years into a small, expanding confectionary business, I have such admiration for her. It has been challenging but she does not have a single regret. In fact, she says to me, “I was in a classroom teaching young people about taking risks and challenging themselves when I was afraid to do so!”
My admiration for her is due, in part, to my personal risk aversion. I am afraid, to take a chance on something I love which could fail; afraid to lose my sense of security.
However, these stories give me hope and a growing confidence that I, too, can take the risk!
So now I ask you…Are you stuck and unhappy? Are you afraid to take a risk? Yes, there could be consequences that could very well leave us feeling like a failure but isn’t the risk worth taking for a chance of living a satisfying life? The upshot of us stepping out in faith could be a life of fulfillment, owning our own business or maybe even competing with the best for $10,000!
How is that for 2021!
